The Dance of the Panther Men

Depuis plus de trois ans, le Théâtre des Arts Vivants entretient des liens étroits avec les Hommes Panthère du district de Zoukougbeu.

The Panther Men society among the Niaboua is a renowned initiatory group, especially known for its traditional dance. More than just an artistic expression, it serves as a channel for spiritual and social communication, weaving a link between the tangible world and the spiritual universe.

This dance is performed during the “outing of the initiates,” a crucial annual event that concludes a seven-month initiation in the sacred forest. Members are believed to possess great powers of seduction, the ability to become invisible, knowledge of medicinal plants, and extrasensory abilities that allow them to perceive the “invisible world.”

For over three years, the Théâtre des Arts Vivants has maintained close ties with the Panther Men of the Zoukougbeu district. In collaboration with the keepers of this tradition and academics, TAV is committed to promoting and preserving this intangible heritage.

A documentary is currently in production, aiming to raise awareness about this tradition.

  • Ethnological Study: Deepening knowledge through a detailed study of this culture.
  • Meeting with Academics: Collaboration with researchers who specialize in the subject.
  • Establishing an Initial Priority Framework: Defining the project’s priorities in consultation with all stakeholders.
  • Engaging with Government Authorities: Raising awareness among government representatives to ensure recognition of cultural preservation efforts.
  • Producing a Documentary: Creating a documentary to share the cultural richness of this tradition and raise awareness among a broader audience.
